Vidya Balan used pads to look busty in The Dirty Picture

Vidya Balan, whose bold antics and revealing clothes in The Dirty Picture is becoming the talk of the town, apparently had to use pads and prosthetics to look bustier.

Vidya Balan, who portrayed yesteryears' South siren Silk Smitha had to look extremely sensual in her upcoming film The Dirty Picture. As Vidya wore deep-neck and cleavage revealing cholis, she had to look heavy. Vidya was not only asked to put on some weight, but also had to use pads and prosthetics to look more bustier.

Vidya Balan's designer Niharika Khan informed a leading website that Vidya had to use pads and prosthetics for some scenes to look bustier. This apparently took a toll on Vidya Balan's health and she fell ill.

The Dirty Picture will release this Friday on December 2nd.

Vidya Balan speaks to City Times ahead of The Dirty Picture’s Dubai release

AS EACH WEEKEND approaches the Bollywood machine rolls out yet another film for the vast Dubai audience’s approval, hoping to make a mark on the cinematic landscape for at least the opening few days. Each of these movies usually carries the requisite amount of action, romance, comedy and song to satiate the paying crowd’s appetite for ‘masala’ before it is carted off to the big celluloid vault in the sky on a Sunday morning.
However, there are times, rare as they may be, when the anticipation of a film’s release reaches such a point that even the casual Indian film industry observer realises that the people behind the work are on to something special.
The Dirty Picture is such a film. Since the promotional material was unveiled in Mumbai in September, newspaper columns, talk shows and Internet discussions have been awash with speculation and conjecture on not ‘if’ this piece of cinema will be a success, but ‘how’ critically and commercially acclaimed it will eventually become.
For what you get in The Dirty Picture is arguably Bollywood’s best actress staring in a big-budget semi-biographical film inspired by the life of the enigmatic and alluring 80s south Indian film star and sex symbol Silk Smitha. And if that doesn’t send punters flocking to the multiplex on Thursday, nothing will.
Incredibly beautiful and equally talented Vidya Balan’s title of most sought after actress has been garnered through dedication to her craft and unconventional character choices.
Playing mother to the 69-year-old Amitabh Bachchan in R. Balki’s family drama Paa and the crusading sister of Jessica Lall in political thriller No One Killed Jessica have resulted in accolades that endear commentators to regard her every move as inspired, not least her latest decision to take up the mantle of reimagining The Dirty Picture’s controversial heroine on the big screen.
“Her ticket to stardom was her brazenness and the use of her body,” Vidya told us about Silk Smitha, the character she plays. During a phone interview from India’s movie making epicentre she continued, “She thought ‘I like my body, you like to watch my body, so this is something we can all enjoy.’”
While the protagonist of The Dirty Picture is called Silk Smitha, Vidya intoned that the film only borrows her name and a few aspects of her life to convey the story. Yet, the 33-year-old actress wanted to portray the icon as accurately as possible both aesthetically and in the communication of her charm and charisma.
“She was a ‘bindaas’ character. She said what she liked and did what she liked and I found that most interesting about her. We have very few people in the world that live their lives exactly as they want to and that was extremely inspiring. It was an irresistible prospect to play a character like that. We all remember Silk for being as sexual as a woman can get.”
When signing on for the part Vidya was told she would have to put on weight to properly reflect the more voluptuous shapes of the actresses of the time – a proposition that she was initially reluctant to go along with.
“I eventually put on 12 kilograms for the role. I gained a little at a time to see how much looked fine. It’s easy to put on weight, but it’s difficult to lose it and at first I didn’t want to put myself through that. I couldn’t have done a 80s southern actress justice if I didn’t do it though. They were buxom and I had to go the whole hog. I’m well endowed myself, but I still needed to get that shape.”
If you were around then or even if you’ve watched television serials including the second season of the British Life on Mars or films such as The Wedding Singer, you’ll know that, like all ages, the 1980s had distinct style to it.
“I loved the period,” Vidya said. “Big sunglasses and big, colourful clothes dominated and it was so much fun getting into the costumes and subsequently falling into the time frame. I had a lot of input into my outfits and I got to live out my fantasy in that respect as I would have loved to have been my age at that time.”
There was a suggestion early on in production that the title The Dirty Picture may prove a little racy for the public and the censors alike. While the initial reaction has been nothing but positive, it was put to Vidya whether she expects any criticism. The star replied that she welcomes any constructive comments, but challenges anyone to remark on the movie’s morality stating she has just been honest to the script, which has been expertly put together.
It could be put forward that the tremendous response has simply stemmed from Vidya’s involvement.Quite unique in Bollywood, the actress does not attract much prying into her personal affairs with the media solely focussing on her work. On this issue Viday stated, “I enjoy being in the spotlight, but there are some things that are personal and I want to keep it like that. Just as much as I wouldn’t publicise something like a tiff I had with my mother, for example, I won’t publicise anything about my personal life.
“The media has respected my space. If there is any speculation I am honest about it, which is why not much comes up.”
After the release of The Dirty Picture Vidya will next be seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani.
“It’s a thriller set in Kolkata,” she explained. “A six-month pregnant woman comes in from London to search for her husband. There aren’t too many supernatural thrillers in Bollywood, but this is one.
“The whole reason I became an actor is to challenge myself. I never want to repeat the same role. To get the opportunity to live extremely divergent people on screen, I’m making the most of these times. There is an urge in me to be different,” the versatile star concluded.
Who is Slik Smitha?
With 450 films to her name and a career spanning 17 years, Silk was the original item girl. In the conservative world of 80s Indian cinema, Silk (real name Vijayalakshmi) tore up the rule book by performing eyebrow-raising song and dance numbers in a variety of southern films. Outraging public morality, however, took a backseat to how much business she could command for the movies she appeared in, hence the enormous number that bear her name.
At the peak of her career Silk earned more money than many of her counterparts combined – a fact that led to her establishing her own production house. Yet, this move is said to have ultimately contributed to Silk’s downfall as it is alleged the unsuccessful business venture, combined with a turbulent love life and a string of dependencies caused her to take her own life in Chennai in 1996 although this hypothesis is still shrouded in mystery.
Today Silk Smitha is seen as a revolutionary. A celebration of women’s independence, The Dirty Picture looks to honour her life by opening in India on December 2, which would have been Silk’s 51st birthday.

Shilpa Shetty speaks about the secret of her slim body

Guess who is speaking finally? She is Bollywood’s one of the best bodies - Shilpa Shetty. Shilpa is one of those actresses in the industry who has maintained a well-toned body since her first movie Baazigar.

Till date even after her marriage, Shilpa haven’t yet gained an inch muscle. Talking about a perfect body business in Bollywood, Shilpa told TOI, "My goal is to achieve personal happiness. At the same time, discipline is extremely important. If you have to be fit especially if you are a working woman who happens to be in movie business, you cannot be fat. More than looking good, its about being healthy.

All it takes is 20 minutes a day to burn out the excess calories. Good diet which means no junk food at all. No McDonalds french fries and burgers. Do not indulge daily. Also its not about not eating anything you like. You can always cut down the intake. Eat half a pastry in a day instead of the whole piece. I indulge every Sunday. I have pizza etc but the tip is to have it in moderation. I can never diet. I also see to it that I dress according to my body type. For the past 20 years, my weight hasn't fluctuated much. Its between 57-60 kgs which I think is great.”

Shilpa many a times said that she is gifted with a great body. Thanks to her genes that still makes her Ms Perfect body of the era.

What does Kareena Kapoor’s ‘Chhamak Chhallo’ say?

Remember Mera naam Chin Chin Chu? That was probably the first time an ‘item girl’ introduced herself. While Chin Chin Chu does sound ‘different’, the names of item girls haven’t really taken the sensible route since then. But now we’ve moved a step further and attached certain messages to names that are much more than just hatke

It’s okay if you want to coin names that are catchy and colloquial, but you can’t deny that the acts that follow do raise eyebrows. While Chin Chin Chu didn’t come with a list of complaints or secrets attached, nowadays it seems as if all item girls (or boys) want to put their point across in a very effective manner indeed. So if you think the point got lost amidst rising hemlines, sinuous curves and oodles of bling, here’s a little help to sort out just who is doing what…..

Chhamak Chhallo, the village hottie - Here's one item girl who is being wooed by a superhero. 'Wanna be my Chhamak Chhallo?' teaches a valuable lesson on how to ask a girl out while on the dance floor. But you know what, the lesson might have worked in the case of a superhero, but what about lesser mortals like you and..err...me? Guess Chhamak Chhallo needs to speak up!

Nandana Sen gets hate mail for nudity in Rang Rasiya

Actress Nandana Sen, who created an uproar five years ago after a portrait in which she posed as Goddess Laxmi was leaked while shooting a film, has revealed that she received hate mail and faced objections from different quarters for a nude scene in the period drama Rang Rasiya, where she plays the muse for 19th century painter Raja Ravi Varma.

In an interview with the PTI, Nandana Sen said, "I received hate mail for the scenes. There were objections from different quarters also. If a Kate Winslet does a nude scene, it's okay there. But if it happens in India we create an uproar. What's wrong in depicting nudity in a dignified way?"

Earlier, the Bengali girl has done a backless scene in Tango Charlie in 2005. Now, she regrets that nudity is still a taboo in India. Nandana Sen added, "There are two ways of depicting nudity. One is demeaning to a woman where you objectify her body, while the other one celebrates the power of women. These incidents are similar to what happens with my character Sugandha in the film."

However, Nandana Sen plays muse to painter Raja Ravi Varma in the biopic Rang Rasiya. In the film Sugandha had to face ostracism from society for baring her body as a model for the artist. Holding that there should be no shame attached to the human body, the film's director Ketan Mehta said "Sensuality has been an integral part of the Indian culture. "We are proud of the sculptures and paintings in Khajuraho and Konark. Liberating our minds is important."

Bollywood filmmaker Imtiaz Ali's much-awaited film Rockstar will hit the big screens this weekend. But do you know Ranbir Kapoor wasn't the first choice for the film. Initially, John Abraham was approached for the film, but a complete change in the story turned down the entire idea.

“The protagonist is now a Jat from Delhi, and much younger than the previous character,” he told the media. But carrying no hard feelings further, John still has turned out to be an ardent supporter of the film. “Rockstar is Ranbir’s film and it’s coming out great. I don’t want to talk about the past,” John said.

Clad in a sky-blue lehenga that complimented her eyes, Ash grooved to this foot-tapping number from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam with ease and energy.
She not only charmed Ajay Devgn, she got us hook, line and sinker too.

Amitabh lashes at media over Aishwarya Rai's birthday rumour

Amitabh Bachchan has lashed out at a certain section of the media for creating rumours of how Aishwarya Rai Bachchan planned to celebrate her birthday on his blog.

Amitabh Bachchan is extremely upset with the media who have been constantly cooking up stories on how Aishwarya Rai would celebrate her birthday (Ash celebrated her birthday on November 1st.) The media has been speculating about Ash's birthday plans much before her birthday. Stories on what gifts Bachchan's plan to give Aishwarya, who the guests are and what they are to be wearing have been doing the rounds for a long time.

Terming all rumour as untrue, Amitabh said, “truth is that nothing of the sort is happening here at home, or any truth in what is being spread about the gifts and the occasion.”

Speaking about the media's intrusion at Aishwarya's godh bharai, Big B wrote on his blog, “On the day of the ‘godh bharai’, they were pushing sneakily their equipment between the cracks in the doorway to the house to get that desired picture or any picture. When controlled by security, they spat on them. Yes they actually spit on the security.”
